Foreword:
"...The present brief account is not a belated rejoinder to Schopenhauer’s attack. Nor is it an attempt to ex plain away the fact that the judges hardly possessed the intellectual suppleness and openness needed to recog nize Schopenhauer’s genius. It serves as excuse that few contemporaries did. But the purpose is not to excuse. The concern of this paper is merely to account briefly for the affair, for the backgrounds of those who formu lated the prize subject and of those who judged the en try, and for what they probably expected from an entry. In our pluralistic age it may be easier to distinguish between recognition of quality and consensus than was the case when Schopenhauer was rejected by the Acad emy over 150 years ago. This, too, has to be considered if we are to answer the question whether Schopenhauer’s entry was unfairly rejected..."
